Standing desks in schools are simply a necessity in many classrooms across the U.S., educators each year find that more and more students require or are receiving accommodations for less restrictive seating arrangements. Standing desks promote student self-regulation and focus. Unfortunately, many of these standing desks come with a hefty price tag. Many school vendors offer them anywhere between $150-$350 for an individual desk. Teachers regularly scramble to create standing desks in their classrooms on a budget.

There are numerous benefits for providing your students with the option to stand during class. Standing desks contribute to a student's overall health and wellness and are shown to improve engagement and a child's brain function and academic performance.

          Key Benefits of Standing Desks:

  • Least restrictive position, students have the ability to stand and move, burning excess energy (esp. students with ADHD)

  • Contributes to overall core strength & improved body posture

  • The brain is automatically turned on when standing, which supports student engagement and focus

  •  Increased circulation/ normalizes blood sugar levels (esp. after lunchtime)

  • Less behavioral issues as students show signs of improved attention, alertness, and time on task benefits

 Important teacher takeaways!

It may be beneficial to ask your school administrator to purchase a few standing desks each year to offset individual classroom costs. Create a classroom environment that offers an assortment of seating arrangements to accommodate your students’ needs. Be flexible and creative when developing seating arrangements and layouts in your room.
